Abstract

Ketene is prepared by the thermal decomposition of acetone in a pyrolysis vessel the inner surface of which is composed of a steel having the composition of from 14 to 18% chromium, a maximum of 0,12% carbon and the balance substantially entirely iron. The vessel may be made of "Sandvik" (Registered Trade Mark) 2c-34, in the form of a straight, serpentine, or coiled tube. In a preferred method, acetone is continuously passed in vapour form through such an elongated tube at about 700-800 DEG C. at a mass velocity of about 10,000 to 40,000 lbs./sq. in./hr. with a contact time of about 0,01 to 0,1 sec.; there is a pressure differential between the inlet and outlet of the tube of up to about 15 p.s.i.
