Abstract

PURPOSE: To confer upon steel excellent resistance to high temperature liquid or gaseous nitric acid by including a specific amount of Si in extra-low carbon high- chrome type sustenite stainless steel.
CONSTITUTION: Two to five % Si is added to the sustenite stainless steel contianing < 0.0% C, < 6% Mn, 23 to 30 % Cr, 17 to 27% Ni, and < 0.4% N. The influence of hexavalent chromium having a relevance to the corrosion of austenite stainless steel by nitric acid is reduced by the addition of Si. Thus, the steel exhibits excellent nitric acid resistance even in a severe nitric acid atmosphere in the nitric acid manufacturing process.
