Abstract
822,314. Preventing corrosion. CENTRAL ELECTRICITY GENERATING BOARD, and LEES, B. Dec. 16, 1957 [Dec. 16, 1957], No. 1682/57. Class 51 (1). The metal corrosive properties of combustion gases are reduced by introducing an aqueous solution of alkali salt into the gases after the combustion chamber or flame zone. An aqueous solution of the carbonate or hydroxide of sodium or potassium is injected as a mist or spray into the flue gases from fuel-fired boilers, furnaces or heat-exchangers to mix with the gases before they contact the metal surfaces of heat economizers or other heat-exchangers. The amount of alkali salt introduced may be up to 0.2% by weight of the fuel consumed.
