Abstract
Alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons are dealkylated in the presence of hydrogen at elevated temperature by contact with a molten salt or a mixture of molten salts. Suitable conditions are 700-1200 DEG C., 0.01-0.1 sec., 1-40 atm. abs. and a hydrogen to hydrocarbon mol ratio of 1-20. The reactants may be passed through the molten salt(s) but preferably the salt is entrained in the feed. In the drawing, hydrocarbons and hydrogen enter by lines 9 and 11 and entrain molten salt at 4. The salt is separated at the top of reactor 1 and passes by liquid seal 8 into the regenerator 2, surrounding the reactor, where the salt is regenerated <PICT:0911321/IV (b)/1> and heated by oxygen, with added fuel or flue gas if necessary, from line 14. The product is quenched, e.g. with steam from inlets 20. If desired, hydrogen may be supplied by cracking a hydrocarbon yielding hydrogen by contact with the salt before introducing the hydrocarbon to be dealkylated. Suitable salts are hardening salts used in metallurgy, alkali metal, particularly potassium, sulphates or chlorides or their double salts or other metal chlorides, sulphides or cyanides. When using mixtures, these preferably corresponding to the eutectic point. Specification 859,079 is referred to.
