Abstract
Hydrocarbons, such as crude benzene are purified by catalytic hydrogenation in at least two stages, the catalyst in the first stage being cobalt with molybdenum preferably on a carrier of high mechanical strength such as a silicate-containing alumina and in the second stage a molybdenum-alumina catalyst free of cobalt. Preferably two zones are used alternately in the first stage, the one not on stream being freed of deposits by air or steam at 450-500 DEG C. The first stage may be at 320-340 DEG C. and the second which may have a larger amount of catalyst, 310-330 DEG C.
