Abstract

910,403. Spade &c. handles. ENGLISH TOOLS Ltd. June 15, 1959 [July 19, 1958], No. 23225/58. Class 61. A spade, fork, or shovel has a tubular shaft which from its upper end down to well below its mid-length is sheathed with a synthetic resinous material, the shaft being provided with an annular abutment to face the lower end of the sheath, the radial width of the abutment being approximately equal to the thickness of the sheath. The abutment 3 comprises an inset peripheral ridge in the shaft 1. Alternatively the abutment may comprise the end face of a ferrule or the upper end of a socket formed integrally with the tool blade. The sheath 4 may be shrunk on to the shaft with the aid of heat, adhered to the shaft by adhesive, forced on to the shaft with an interference fit or the shaft may be sheathed by a dipping operation. The shaft is provided with a T or D type handle providing an abutment for the upper end of the sheath. The handle may be made wholly or partly of plastics. A D-type handle, Fig. 11, has a metal forked part 70 and a hollow hand grip 71 of plastics naterial provided with end plugs 72 through which it is riveted to the ends of the forked part 70. In a modification a wooden hand-grip sheathed with plastics material is provided. Specification 910,404 is referred to.
