[Class 61 (i).] A shovel, spade, or like implement having a tubular metal shank, has one end fitted with a handle and the other end fitted into or over a tubular split shank portion of the blade or the like. The blade a of a spade having an integral split shank portion b which may be tapered, is connected to a hollow metal shank d by means of a wooden wedge i or it may be simply a wedge-tight fit. A handle f is secured to the upper end of the shank in a variety of ways, permanently or detachably, and may be of wood or metal.
