[Also in Group XXVII] A fuel injection testing instrument for connection to a fuel line leading from a fuel pump of a fuel injection engine comprises a block 1 with a bore 10 communicating with inlet means 19 by which block 1 can be connected to the fuel line, a relief valve 9, a pressure gauge 2 connected to bore 10, valve means 7 arranged to open against its bias at a predetermined pressure lower than that at which the relief valve will open and a manually controllable bleed valve 11, 13. To test injectors under working conditions, a T-piece is inserted between the pump and the injector and is connected to the inlet 19 of the instrument. Valve 11 is opened with the engine idling or the pump being operated manually until air in the system is displaced by the fuel pressure opening ball valves 17, 13. When the air has been removed, valve 11 is closed and the pointer on the pressure gauge 2 should soon indicate the delivery pressure, which can be adjusted until it is correct. If the pressure applied is too great ball valve 9 will open thus protecting the pressure gauge 2.
