Cylinders receiving liquid fuel.-In a fuel injection system comprising a fuel pump A delivering against a sensibly canstant pressure into a vessel or accumulator C communicating with a mechanically-operated valve Q which supplies an automatic spring-loaded injection valve J, the injection valve J is put into communication with either the fuel supply tank B or with the atmos. phere during the period when injection is not taking place. The valve Q is provided with fuel passages or with a reduced annular portion coacting with the inlet port S leading from the accumulator C, the port U leading to the injection valve. J, and a port T leading to the fuel tank B or to the atmosphere, the arrangement being such that the ports S, T are never both uncovered at the same time. The valve Q is operated by a cam M through a lever L which may be pivoted on an eccentrically mounted spindle N adjustable by governor or otherwise to vary the time and duration of the fuel injection. The duration of the injection period may also be varied by providing an inclined face on the annular shoulder of the valve Q which coacts with the port S, and adjusting the valve Q rota.tably.
