Abstract

[Also in Division G1 Variations in the rate of flow of a liquid being intermittently ejected from a nozzle are detected at a measuring point in a passageway connected to the nozzle, a throttle being provided at the other end of the passageway, which is such that pressure variations reflected from the throttle do not reach the measuring point during the period of the injection being observed. Fuel from pump 1 passes to injector 3 having a nozzle needle 5 operated by fluid pressure. Pipe 9 is coupled to the nozzle 4 and is connected at its other end to a perforated disc 16, constituting a throttle, connecting pipe 9 to a pipe 19 closed by a spring loaded valve element 20. Near the nozzle 4 a wire strain gauge 11 is mounted on pipe 9 and is connected to an oscillograph to indicate pressure variations. A modified throttle member (Fig. 2) is variable by adjusting screw 24. Valve 20 preferably opens at a pressure equal to the compression in a cylinder of an internal combustion engine to which outlet 21 is connected.
