Abstract

Tobacco sheet material is formed from finely divided tobacco using a polysaccharide gum such as ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose as an adhesive and tetraethylene glycol as a humectant. A cross-linking agent such as glyoxal or oxystarch may be included. In forming the sheet material, tobacco particles may be mixed with the adhesive or coated on a layer thereof and, where an aqueous slurry of tobacco and adhesive is used, paper or tobacco fibres may be added. The sheet material may be used for cigar wrappers, binders or fillers or cigarette fillers. The ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose may be used in combination with other gums, and locust bean gum (a galactomannan gum), methyl cellulose and carboxymethyl cellulose are mentioned as gums with which it will combine in all proportions. Specification 909,273 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 874,135.
