Abstract

A suspension in water of a substantially water-insoluble adhesive and of finely divided tobacco, at least part of which is entirely dry ground, is applied to a film-forming surface, dried and removed from the surface as a water-resistant sheet material for use as cigar binders and wrappers and cigarette paper and for chewing and, when shredded, alone or with shredded whole tobacco as a cigar, cigarette or pipe filler. Alternatively, the suspension may be calendered, extruded or moulded into the sheet. The adhesive is preferably a polysaccharide and may be cellulose glycolic acid, viscose, hydroyethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl carboxymethyl cellulose, a galactomannan gum, a polyuronide (e.g. a pectin), calcium or magnesium pectate or a water-insoluble algin compound, e.g. calcium alginate. Leaf or stem tobacco or tobacco dust may be used. Inorganic fillers such as kaolin, fuller's earth and cellulosic preparations may be added to the suspension, as well as food dyes. Fibres such as of paper pulp, asbestos or glass may also be added, as may glycerine and glyoxal. Quantitative process examples are given.
