Abstract

To retain the tobacco of an internal mouthpiece cigarette in position until the cigarette has been completely smoked, whilst allowing recovery of substantially all the tobacco from such a cigarette when rejected unsmoked, the cigarette paper enclosing the tobacco is internally coated adjacent the mouthpiece with an adhesive containing fire-retardants and which is so applied or of such a character as only to adhere appreciably to the tobacco under the heat or other effects of smoking. Suitable adhesives which, after operative application while wet, are effective when dried, and must therefore be wholly or surface dried after application to the cigarette paper before it comes in contact with the tobacco, are composed of (1) 67 per cent. by weight of a highly dextrinized starch containing approximately 35 per cent water, 21 per cent by weight of ammonium sulphate and 12 per cent by weight of water, or (2), according to the Provisional Specification, a highly dextrinized starch and an alum, to which may be added a powdered thermoplastic resin such as polythene. Suitable adhesives which, after operative application, are not effective when dried without heating are composed of (1) 37 per cent by weight of a highly dextrinized starch containing approximately 35 per cent. water, 39 per cent. by weight of water, 15 per cent by weight of ammonium sulphate, 7 per cent by weight of stearic acid, 1 per cent by weight of borax and 1 per cent by weight of the substance known under the Registered Trade Mark "Teepol" or (2), according to the Provisional Specification, gum tragocanth and an alum.
