Abstract

A tobacco smoking material is formed from finely-ground tobacco mixed with an adhesive and a dialdehyde polysaccharide. Adhesives mentioned are methyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl carboxymethyl cellulose, gum karaya or tragacanth, starches, polyuronides, pectins, algins, galactomannans such as guar and locust bean gum, and dextrans. The dialdehydes are preferably formed by oxidation of the polysaccharides with periodic acid; examples of polysaccharides given are cellulose, starch, dextran and galactomannans. The adhesive is mixed with a humectant such as glycerine and with the dialdehyde substance and to the mixture is added finely-ground tobacco powder, e.g. powder passing through a 200-mesh sieve. The slurry is applied to an endless band in a thin layer which is dried, remoistened, and stripped off into a coiled sheet which can subsequently be used as a shredded filler or as a wrapper or binder.
