Abstract
908,890. Fire - extinguishing. RASBASH, D. J. Dec. 11, 1958 [Sept. 11, 1957], No. 28685/57. Class 47. [Also in Group XXVI] In a method of fire-fighting a current of humidified gas is propelled towards the vicinity of the fire by means of energy derived from a gas turbine engine, the humidity being present in the form of water vapour so that the current is transparent. The exhaust gas of the gas turbine engine may be directly humidified by spray nozzles located in a duct connected to the exhaust or the engine may drive a high-speed fan placed in an air duct, the air then being humidified. The water entering the humidifier may be heated to a temperature near the wet bulb temperature of the gas and baffles which may be adjustable or removable may be provided in the humidifier to create turbulence. Further water spray may be introduced into the gas at the entrance to or along ducting by which it is carried to the heat of the fire. Another method of humidifying the gas is by cooling the exhaust with cold water at a rate greater than that required to humidify the gas. The water drops remaining in the gas are removed by baffles. Some of the gas produced by the engine and humidifier may be recirculated through the engine. Apparatus for production of the humidified gas, Fig. 4, which may be mounted on a vehicle comprises an engine 16, a reheat section 17 connected to a pipe section 18 serving as a humidifier, a cooling jacket 19, and spray nozzles 23.
