Abstract
707,159. Wind tunnel. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. June 13, 1952 [June 18, 1951], No. 14401/51. Class 4 A jet engine driven high speed wind tunnel has part of the hot exhaust of the tunnel used for regenerating air drying material used at the entrance to the tunnel. Referring to Fig. 1, the jet engine 1 draws air through the working section 7, and part of the hot exhaust is collected at 13 and guided by duct 17 to the tunnel entrance. Valves 16 and 16<SP>1</SP> direct the flow over drying sections 23 or 23<SP>1</SP>, the former as shown, the floor being guided by flaps 22 and 21, and the silica gel or like drying agent is dried by the hot gases. The tunnel air intake comes through drying action 23<SP>1</SP>. Periodically, valves 16 and 16<SP>1</SP> and flaps 21, 22 and 22<SP>1</SP>, are changed over, section 23 drying incoming air, while section 23<SP>1</SP> is regenerated. In a modification, air is drawn by a fan over a heat exchanger fed by the exhaust, which air is then used to regenerate the drying sections. The jet engine may be placed in a nacelle inside the tunnel as shown in Specification 635,609. Specification 638,052 also is referred to.
