Abstract
908,886. Railway vehicle underframes. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Feb. 28, 1961 [Nov. 30, 1959], No. 40540/59. Class 103(6). An underframe for a railway vehicle, e.g. a diesel locomotive, comprises a pair of inner longitudinally extending side frame members 10, Figs. 1 and 3, disposed substantially in line with the thrust on buffers 9 carried on buffer beams 11 extending across the ends of the members 10, and outer side frame members 13 disposed outside and parallel to the members 10 and stopping short of the buffer beams, longitudinal stresses being transferred between the inner and outer side members by gussets or steps 17, 18 disposed between the ends of the members 13, through transverse webs 15 connecting the members 10, 13, and the side faces of the members 10 and by gussets or steps 16 between the ends of the members 13 and the buffer beams 11. Further transverse webs 15 also connect the members 10, 13. A ballnot weight 19 extends across the members 10 and serves as an anchorage for the ends of bearers 20 for the engine 3. Further transverse members 21, between the members 10, carry ballast supports 23.
