Abstract

908,879. Feeding filter aid. ETABLISSEMENTS G. PEPIN FILS AINE ET SOC. DU FILTRE GASQUET, and BERRY, G. May 17, 1961 [Nov. 7, 1960], No. 18035/61. Class 46. To form a bed on a filter (not shown)- beyond a point 25 in a flow line 30, diatomaceous earth is deposited in a reservoir I and made into a suspension by pre-filt admitted at 2, 34. Then a valve 1 is partly or wholly closed and a valve 3 is opened, valve 2 remaining open, to feed the suspension to the filter. Meanwhile a suspension of diatomaceous earth is being formed in a reservoir II, and after formation is continuously circulated through a pump 21 by withdrawal at 37 and re-introduction at 39. When the bed formed on the filter is complete, cocks 2 and 3 are closed and cock 1 opened appropriately. A valve 9 is provided to permit the pump 21 (which has'a constant output) to feed intermittently a proportion of diatomaceous earth slurry into the flow line at b. The valve 9 is operated electrically by a circuit 9a including a contact breaker 26. 'The contact breaker is operated in turn by an adjustable rotary cam 15, and the cam is adjusted to provide the desired ratio of valve-open period to valve-closed period. The cam motor is then switched on so that some suspension is fed intermittently from reservoir II to the flow line, the remaining portion of the pump output being returned to reservoir II via pipe 39 and valve 8 to keep the suspension stirred. When reservoir II is empty it is replaced by reservoir I which has meanwhile been replenished. Downstream of the filter is a pump (not shown). The pressure in the reservoirs is constrained to vary directly with the liquid pressure in the flow line by a valve 23 which feeds gas from a cylinder 22 to either reservoir as appropriate (through 42 or 43) and which is controlled by pipe 44 connected to the flow line.
