During filtration filtered water passes down a pipe 8<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, into a filled scavenging- water reservoir 14 and out at 32 to use. For scavenging, a valve 31 on pipe 32 is closed and valves 21 and 27 communicating with a scavenging air pump 20 are opened. Both air and scavenging water are thereby forced into chamber 6, 7 and up through nozzles 4. Pipe 32 may be connected to chamber 6, 7. The scavenging-water reservoir 14 may be higher than the filter bed. In Fig. 1, stated to be a previously-known plant, filtered water is discharged at 25 after scavenging-water reservoir 14 has been filled (through valve 12 on pipe 13). For scavenging, valve 11 is also closed, valve 12 being already closed, and valves 15, 17, 21 are opened. Scavenging water is withdrawn by pump 16 and discharged into chamber 6, 7 through pipe 8, while scavenging air is discharged through pipe 19 into chamber 6, 7.
