Abstract

875,340. Filters ; cleaning filters. MULLER, J. March 17, 1960 [April 8, 1959], No. 9467/60. Class 46. [Also in Group XXVIII] Diesel-engine fuel-oil is supplied by a feed pump, (not shown), through a pipe 9, Fig. 1, to a filter 1 at a rate greater than it is consumed by the engine, the excess, after filtration, passing from the filtrate chamber 5 through an orifice 27, Fig. 2, in a pump cylinder 23, and across to a spring-loaded discharge valve 28 opening into an auxiliary pipe 30 connected to the tank (not shown). To clean the filter elements, filtrate is forced back through them by manipulation of the piston 26, 24, after a drain plug 32, Fig. 1, has been unscrewed sufficiently to permit a discharge hole 35 to communicate with the outside. The pressure of the back-flow unseats a spring-loaded ball 33 normally closing the inlet to the plug cavity 34. Each filter element consists of a stack of washers 37, Fig. 3, spring held about a perforated guide-tube 17, Fig. 1, between a rod 20 and a cap 19. Each washer 37 has triangular micrometric filtering grooves inclined oppositely on opposite faces. Pump 23 serves also for priming and air removal.
