Abstract
908,856. Forge tongs. SCHWERMASCHINENBAU R. RAU. VEB. March 22, 1961, No. 10531/61. Class 78 (4). A pair of forge tongs 14, Fig. 1, mounted in a collar 15, Fig. 3, are resiliently connected to a lifting column 2 suspended from an overhead trolley 1, Fig. 1, by a forked member 11, Fig. 3, and resiliently braced against axial movement in the collar 15 by struts 20. As described, the collar 15 is suspended on swivel pins by springs 16, 17 and rods 12, 13 within the forked member 11. The struts 20, Fig. 1, comprise hydraulic rams which effect angular movements of the tongs in a vertical plane. Springs 22, 23, or rubber blocks, act on the piston 21 in both directions and provide the resilient bracing force. An electric motor 3 rotates the column 2 about a vertical axis and in so doing moves a cam-nut 6 up or down a shaft 5 to operate limit switches 7, 8 which interrupt the current supply to the motor 3. The cams and/or limit switches are adjustable so that the amount of angular movement of the tongs may be varied. An electric motor 18 rotates the tongs about a horizontal axis in either direction.
