Abstract

908,466. Rotary brushes; bristles. OSBORN MANUFACTURING CO. July 4, 1961 [Feb. 1, 1961], No. 24132/61. Class 19. A brush comprises a support and bristles secured thereto and extending therefrom, at least some of the individual bristles having small enlarged portions 5 at intervals along their length. As shown, the bristle 3 which is preferably of steel wire having a Knoop hardness of at least 600 has enlarged portions 5 preferably of an elastomeric material at spaced intervals therealong, the wire between the portions being covered by a coating 4 of elastomeric material. The elastomeric material may be polyurethane, neoprene polyvinyl chloride, foamed polyurethane, rubber or nylon and may have abrasive granules incorporated therein. The bristles may be of tampico fibre, glass fibre, horsehair and nylon; in the case of the latter, the portions 5 may be integral with the bristles. An approximately equal quantity of wire and tampico fibre bristles with plastic beads adhered to the wire has been found satisfactory. The enlarged portions 5 may be formed on the bristles by dropping or printing drops of the material on the travelling wire or the like. Spraying may also be used. The bristles may be secured in an annular channel form back so as to extend radially outwards. The inner ends of the bristles or substantially the whole length of the bristles may then be seated in a body of elastomeric material which is preferably foamed neoprene or polyurethane. Abrasive granular material may be incorporated in the body of elastomeric material. The bristles may be crimped
