This invention relates generally to the class of grinding and polishing and is directed particularly to an improved polishing or sanding device.
A principal object of the present invention is to providea sanding and polishing device in the form of a brush having a plurality of abrasive carrying bristles by means of which sanding and polishing of uneven or fluted surfaces on furniture, plastic articles, etc., can be smoothed and polished without difiiculty when the sanding brush is rotated by a suitable power unit such as an electric drill. I
A further object of the invention is to provide a revolving sanding and polishing brush wherein the bristles or fibers are suitably resilient to conform to uneven surfaces and are impregnated with, or have applied to the surfaces thereof, a suitable abrasive material such as emery powder or the like.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the description of the same proceeds and the invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part of the specification, with the understanding, however, that the invention is not to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described since obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a brush constructed in accordance with the present invention, the complete outline of the brush being defined by broken lines.
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation of a single bristle or fiber of the brush, on a greatly enlarged scale, showing the abrasive elements adhering to the surface thereof. Figure 3 is a view in cross section of the bristle shown in Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view of a bristle which illustrates the distribution of the abrasive material through the bristle fiber.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing the numeral I generally designates the hub portion of a polishing or bufling wheel or brush constructed in accordance with the present invention wherein the bristles which are designated I2, are shown as having their ends suitably inserted in the periphery of the hub and cemented therein as indicated at IA. The hub l0 may also be molded about the ends of the bristles when it is formed of a moldable material such asa plastic or the like. The particular manner in which the bristles are secured in the 'hub of the brush or bufiing wheel is not a feature of the present invention.
The bristles or fibers 12 are of a flexible character and carry a suitable abrasive material which may be either applied to the outer surface of the bristle and caused to adhere thereto by a suitable adhesive or which may be distributed through the body of the bristle fiber In Figure 2 the bristle it which is shown on a greatly enlarged scale, comprises the body portion I 6, Figure 3, to whichthe particles 18 of abrasive material are caused to adhere by a suitable adhesive coating 20.
In Figure 4 where a cross section of a bristle is shown, the bristle, which may be of a suitable absorbent material, is impregnated throughout the abrasive particles, such particles here being designated [8a and, in addition to appearing on and projecting from the surface of the bristle, are distributed through the body of the bristle. Thus it will be seen that in this form as the bristle wears, the worn end portion will always present abrasive particles to the work.
