Abstract

908,295. Valves. MUCON ENGINEERING CO. Ltd., and DOUGLASS, W. Sept. 26, 1960 [Sept. 26, 1959], No. 32796/59. Class 135. [Also in Group XXX] A valve-like device for controlling flow, e.g. of finely divided materials and air, comprises an inner tubular member 1, Fig. 1, defining a flow passage, an outer annular member 7 rotatably mounted on the inner member, and a closure member 14 formed by a flexible sleeve turned back on itself and having its ends fixed respectively to the inner member and to the outer member so that upon relative rotation this sleeve extends as a twisted diaphragm-like closure across the flow passage. A flange 9 of member 7 is rotatably located on a seat 8 and carries an operating handle 10 with a pawl 17 which can engage in notches such as at 18, Fig. 2, to hold the valve in an operated position. The handle 10 is engaged in a circumferential groove 12 and by rotation 180 degrees from the position shown can be released out of this groove into a longitudinal slot 13 to enable retraction of the outer member 7 upwardly to facilitate assembly of the sleeve 14. This sleeve may be initially of conical form. In a modification, the inner tubular member 7 is extended upwardly to enable the sleeve to be stretched out by further retraction of member 7, e.g. for cleaning purposes, and a handle screwable into member 7 against member 1 can act as a clamp in place of the pawl 17. In another modification, the sleeve 14 is shallower axially in its assembled position and is of resilient material such as rubber and is elastically deformed to closed position. In another embodiment, Fig. 11, the flow passage is continued by a second tubular member 25 spaced axially from the members 1, 7 and having a wall aligned with the wall of member 7. A second flexible sleeve 30 turned back on itself is fixed at its ends respectively to the walls of the members 1, 7 ; this sleeve seals the gap between the passage members 1, 25. To enable valves of different diameter to be readily constructed. the inner and outer members 1, 7 may be constituted by any two adjacent members of a nested series of ring members of different diameters but of similar shape.
