Abstract

[Also in Group XXVIII] In a nuclear reactor, the fuel rod receiving tubes are closed by plugs which are locked in position by balls engaging a channel in the tube surface. The lower part of each plug is formed by a sealing member which is urged downwards into engagement with a shoulder on the tube surface to deform a soft metal foil covering the lower face of the member. As shown, the tube 10 is closed by the plug 11 which may be inserted or removed by the handling apparatus 12. It is locked in 10 by the balls 17 and the sealing piece 24 is urged against the shoulder 15 to form a seal by the deformation of the silver, gold, cadmium or nickel foil swaged to the external surface 24a. The lifting arms 47 are mounted on lifting member 46 by the resilient washer 48 and are brought into engagement with either the sleeve 19 or plunger 28 by axial movement of the cam sleeve 50. To remove the plug, 47 and 19 are engaged, and upon raising chain 45 the sleeve 19 is moved upwards, the balls 18 freed and the plug lifted by the engagement of 19 and 21. To seal the plug in position, 47 and 28 are engaged so that upon raising 29 by chain 45 the toggle rollers force the sealing piece 24 downwards. In a further embodiment, not shown, the lifting arms 47 are replaced by claws which are rotated into and out of engagement by a clutch and ratchet operated by an axially movable rod mounted on the lifting member and engaged by the plug.
