Abstract

2,3-Dichloropropene and 2,3-dibromopropene are prepared by reacting allene with chlorine or bromine respectively in the gaseous phase at elevated temperatures. Inert diluent gases may also be present. Preferred chlorination conditions are 360-600 DEG C. and a contact time of 0.2-0.5 seconds, and preferred bromination conditions are 200-550 DEG C. and a contact time of 0.1-10 seconds. Other products obtained are propargyl chloride, monochloroallene, 1,2,3-trichloropropene, 1,2,2,3-tetrachloropropane, propargyl bromide, monobromoallene, 2-bromopropene, and tetrabromopropane.
