Abstract
Polychlorobenzonitriles are made, preferably in the vapour phase, by reacting at an elevated temperature a polychlorobenzyl or a polychlorobenzal chloride, or mixtures thereof, in particular 2, 3, 6-trichloro benzyl and/or benzal chlorides, dichloro, especially 2,6-dichloro benzyl and/or benzal chlorides, with ammonia and oxygen in the presence of an adsorptive material of surface area 0.01 to 2.00 sq. metres/gm., e.g. coke, boiling stones or boiling chips, preferably above 180 DEG C. 2,6-Dichlorobenzyl and benzal chlorides are made preferably by chlorinating p-toluene sulphonyl chloride in the presence of a nuclear chlorination catalyst, hydrolysing, and splitting the sulphonic acid group by heating in an acid medium, and side chain chlorinating the 2,6-dichlorotoluene, of which details are included in the examples, which describe the syntheses of 2,6-dichlorobenzonitrile, 2,3,6-trichlorobenzonitrile, and 2,5-dichlorobenzonitrile, for the last of which the starting material is obtained by high temperature photochlorination of 2,5-dichlorotoluene. Specification 953,554 and Belgian Specification 590,257 are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 947,167 and 947,864.
