Abstract

A process for the production of arylisocyanide dibromides and dichlorides, the aryl group of which may be substituted, comprises reacting an N-arylformamide with a chlorinating or brominating agent at a temperature below 50 DEG C. using, as solvent, thionyl chloride for the chlorinating reaction and thionyl bromide for the brominating reaction. Chlorinating and brominating agents specified include chlorine, sulphuryl chloride, bromine and sulphuryl bromide. Arylformamides specified for use as starting materials include formylaniline, formyltoluidine, N-(4-chlorophenyl)-, -(3,4 - dichlorophenyl)-, -(4 - nitrophenyl)-, -4-methoxyphenyl and -(a -naphthyl) formamides, aryl-formamides with sulphone or substituted sulphonamide groups, bis-formamides derived from phenylene-diamines, benzidine and its derivatives. The examples relate to the preparation of phenyl-, 2-chloro-, 2,3-, 2,5- and 3,4-dichloro-, 2,4,5-trichloro-, 4-chloro-2-methyl-, 4-chloro-2(trifluoromethyl)- and a -naphthyl isocyanide dichlorides and phenyl isocyanide dibromide.
