Abstract

Tri- and/or tetra-chloroethylenes are prepared by passing sym-tetrachloroethane vapour sequentially through a heated open-tube (i.e. free of packing or added catalyst) reaction zone and through an unheated reaction zone, the ratio of the volume of the unheated zone to that of the heated zone being at least 2 : 1 and preferably at least 10 : 1. Preferably up to one mole of chlorine is passed per mole of tetrachloroethane in addition to the latter. The unheated zone may contain packing or catalyst, such as stainless steel, nickel-chromium alloy, porcelain, charcoal or activated carbon. Advantageously a portion of the crude reaction product, preferably a highboiling portion, is recycled to the heated zone. The heated reaction zone is preferably heated so that the effluent temperature is 350-525 DEG C. Pentachloroethane is obtained as by-product. Specification 468,921 is referred to.
