B. Nematoden.
Process for the halogenation of propadiene
The present invention relates to the halogenation of propadiene (CH2 = C = CH2) in the gas phase at elevated temperatures.
The term halogenation as used herein means either chlorination or bromination, g.
It has been found that the halogenation of propadiene forms 2,3-dihalopropene.
The term <(Haiogen as used here means either chlorine or bromine.
It has been found that the chlorination of propadiene forms the main product 2,3-dichloropropene (CH = CCI-CH2Cl); Under optimal conditions the conversion ratio is about 80%, calculated on the chlorine consumed, whereby the reaction mixture consists of about 85% 2, 3-dichloro, or propene in addition to smaller amounts of propargyl chloride (CH2Cl-C? CH), monochloropropadiene (CHCl = C = CH2 ) and compounds with a higher boiling point (mainly 1, 2, 3-trichloropropene or CH2CI-CC1 = CHCI).
Examples of chlorination according to the invention using nitrogen as a diluent:
15 parts by volume of nitrogen. mixed with 1 or 2 parts by volume of chlorine gas, they are heated to the temperature required for the reaction with propadiene and then passed through a vertical pipe, into the lower end of which two parts by volume of propadiene gas are injected. The time required for the reaction mixture to react is controlled by the flow rate of the gases in conjunction with the dimensions of the reaction zone.
The resulting gas mixture is passed through washing towers that are filled with soda lime and through which the excess chlorine and the hydrogen chloride formed are removed. In this way, the further reaction of chlorine with 2,3-dichloropropene, which causes the formation of 1, 2, 2, 3 tetrachloropropane (CH2Cl-CCl2-CH2Cl), is avoided. The washed mixture is cooled to -80 ° C. in order to separate the chlorinated products and the unreacted propadiene from the nitrogen.
By increasing the temperature, the propadiene is evaporated from the liquefied mixture, and the remaining liquefied chlorinated products are separated by fractional distillation.
The chlorinated products are analyzed and identified by infrared spectrography and by determining the chlorine content.
The unreacted propadiene can be returned to the cycle.
The results of various tests are listed in a table below.

The influence of temperature is shown in tests no. R 54, 39 and 42. Considerable soot formation is observed at 700 ° C.
Experiments No. R 44, 46, 55 and 59 show the influence of the contact time (i.e. the time during which the starting mixture is kept at the indicated temperature). At around 1 second and more, the results are practically the same even if the contact time is longer than 5 seconds.
Experiment no. R 48 shows the influence of the decrease in the dilution with nitrogen. No significant change in the distribution of the reaction products is observed, but some formation of non-gaseous products occurs in the reaction zone. Comparison of experiment no. R 49 with experiment no. R 46 shows that changing the ratio of chlorine to propadiene from 1: 2 to 1: 1 increases the formation of products with a higher boiling point.
Very good results are obtained when the temperature is between about 360 and 600 C and the contact time is in the range from about 0.5 to about 0.2 seconds.
The ratio of nitrogen to propadiene and chlorine can vary within a wide range.
A typical example of a good yield of 2,3-dichloropropene with only. Less formation of by-products and a good conversion ratio is shown in experiment no.
It has been found that the main product formed in the bromination of propadiene is 2,3-dibromopropene (CH2 = CBr-CH2Br); Under certain conditions, the conversion ratio is about 80%, calculated on the bromine consumed, whereby the reaction mixture consists of about 98 0 2, 3-dibromopropene.
Examples of bromination according to the invention using nitrogen as a diluent:
Mixtures of 15 parts by volume of nitrogen and one part by volume of bromine gas and 30 parts by volume of nitrogen and 2 parts by volume of bromine gas are heated to the temperature required for the reaction with propadiene and then passed through a vertical tube, into the lower end of which 2 parts by volume of propadiene gas are injected. The time required for the reaction mixture to be able to convert is regulated by the flow rate of the gases in connection with the dimensions of the reaction zone.
The resulting gas mixture is passed through washing towers which are filled with soda lime and through which the excess bromine and the hydrogen bromide formed are removed. In this way, the further reaction of bromine with 2,3-dibromopropene, which causes the formation of 1, 2, 2, 3-tetrabromopropane CH2Br-CBr2-CH2Br, is avoided. The washed mixture is cooled to -80 ° C to separate the brominated products, and the unreacted propadiene is evaporated from the liquefied mixture and the remaining brominated products are separated by fractional distillation.
The brominated products are analyzed and identified by infrared spectrography and by determining the bromine content.
The unreacted propadiene can be returned to the cycle. The results of various tests are listed below in tabular form.

It is possible to carry out the reaction of propadiene and bromine in the gas phase at temperatures of about 200 ° C.-about 550 ° C. in connection with the contact time in such a way that practically only 2,3-dibromopropene is formed.
The distribution and amount of the various compounds in the resulting reaction mixture depends, if the other conditions are the same, on the contact time, that is to say the time during which the reactants are kept at the specified temperature.
At 420 C and a contact time of 0.04 seconds, a significant amount of 1, 2, 2, 3 tetrabromopropane is found; With a contact time of 1 second, 2,3-dibromopropene is practically the only product, and with an even longer contact time, small amounts of monobromine compounds are found.
At 320 C and a short contact time (0.1 seconds) a substantial amount of tetra-bromopropane is found, but this changes in favor of the formation of 2,3-dibromopropene if the contact time is increased; at 4.3 seconds, practically only 2,3-dibromopropene is found. No monobromine compounds are found at 320 C.
On the other hand, an increased formation of monobromine compounds is observed at 520 ° C. (experiment no. 36).
It is also possible to work at a much lower temperature; at 220 C and 6.4 seconds of contact time, mainly 2.3 dibromopropene is found.
Comparison of the experiments No. S 16 and S 17 with other experiments at 320 C show the influence of the change in the ratio of bromine to propadiene from about 1: 2 to about 1: 1. If the contact time is longer (4.5 seconds), it is possible some 2,3-dibromopropene lost in the form of unknown compounds; Shortening the contact time leads to the formation of a considerable amount of tetrabromopropane.
In general, the formation of tetrabromopropane is favored by short contact times.
An increase in temperature leads to a decrease in the formation of tetrabromopropane.
Monobromine products are found with longer contact times and higher temperatures.
Typical examples of a good yield of 2,3 dibromopropene with only a low formation of by-products and a good conversion ratio are shown in experiments S 1, S 13, S 19 and S 16.
It is found that in the bromination of propadiene a considerable amount of tetrabromopropane is found with a very short contact time, whereas in the chlorination of propadiene with a very short contact time the formation of tetrachloropropane is much less pronounced.
It is advisable to use an inert diluent gas such as For example, nitrogen should be used, because in undiluted systems the reaction tends to be uncontrollable. The example is carried out on a laboratory scale, for which it is advisable to use a fairly large ratio of diluents to reactants, but if one works on a technical scale, better means of regulating the contact time and other conditions are available, so that in a process on a large scale, the ratio of diluting gas to reactants can be varied and in particular can be more in favor of the reactants.
The 2,3-dihalopropenes are valuable inter mediate products for chemical syntheses and are themselves effective against certain harmful organisms. men, such as B. nematodes.
