Abstract

The invention comprises 1, 2, 2, 2-tetrachloroethyl sulphenyl chloride and its preparation comprising chlorinating bis-(1, 2, 2, 2-tetrachloroethyl) disulphide, preferably at 40 DEG to -40 DEG C. and is desired in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst. Sub- or super-atmospheric pressures may be used. In the example, the disulphide starting material is prepared as described in Specification 949,374 and contains minor amounts of isomeric forms of the disulphide; chlorination with gaseous chlorine at -20 DEG C. gives on fractionation, the desired sulphenyl chloride containing minor amounts of isomers thereof. The sulphenyl chloride may be used as a nematocide.ALSO:Nematodes in soil are destroyed by applying to the soil 1,2,2,2-tetrachloro-ethyl sulphenyl chloride. The sulphenyl chloride whose preparation is described (see Division C2) contains minor amounts of isomers thereof. Specification 949,374 is referred to.
