Abstract
The invention comprises the cis and trans stereoisomers of 3,4-dichloro-tetrahydrothiophene-1,1-dioxide and a process for the preparation of the cis isomer by chlorinating 2,5-dihydrothiophene-1, 1-dioxide with gaseous chlorine in a non polar liquid containing no chlorination catalysts which are ionic in nature and a process for the preparation of the trans isomer by chlorinating 2,5-dihydrothiophene-1,1-dioxide with gaseous chlorine in a polar liquid medium or in a non polar solvent which contains a chlorination catalyst which is ionic in nature. The chlorination product from both processes contains a mixture of isomers containing predominantly the desired isomer and the isomers are separated by repeated recrystalisations. In examples the cis isomer is prepared in a carbon tetrachloride medium and the trans isomer in a chloroform, chlorobenzene, carbontetrachloride and benzene medium using ferric chloride, iron, iodine, and antimony and aluminium chlorides as chlorination catalysts.ALSO:Nematocidal compositions comprise an inert, non-alkaline diluent and, as active ingredient, from 10 to 90% of a cis or trans stereoisomer of 3,4 - dichlorotetrahydrothiophene - 1,1 - dioxide. The active compounds may be formulated into any of the usual solid or liquid forms and surfactants may be added.
