Abstract
907,499. Gravity-separation of liquids. MEISSNER, F. O., and MEISSNER, H. O. A., [trading as MEISSNER, J. [firm of]]. Dec. 2, 1960 [Dec. 3, 1959], No. 41595/60. Class 46. Immiscible liquids, e.g. nitroglycerine and a (lighter) washing liquid such as water, overflow from the top of a washing column 1, to which they are introduced at 10, into a separating vessel 2. Here the upper surface of the lighter liquid reaches level B and the interface reaches level A. When washing is completed, a valve 201 on a lighter-liquid discharge pipe 200 is closed and further washing liquid is passed in at 10 until level C (at the top of a further lighter-liquid discharge pipe 212) is reached. The interface has now descended to the bottom of the vessel 2 so that all of the heavy liquid is discharged through a pipe 22. The end of pipe 22 is accommodated in a recess 231, Fig. 2, which has an upstanding cone 230 forming with the lower end of the pipe 22 a restricted outlet, so that the velocity of the discharging liquid will be increased in this region and complete discharge thus ensured. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the cone 230 is dispensed with and the lower end of pipe 22 is outwardly flared and serrated. Pipe 200, Fig. 1, may be vertically movable in a bearing 202, in which case valve 201 and pipe 212 may be dispensed with. The vessel 2 is provided with stabilizing plates (not shown).
