Abstract
In a countercurrent liquid-liquid extraction process in a column comprising perforated plates arranged one below the other, the liquids are fed alternately, each liquid flowing only when flow of the other is interrupted and each liquid flowing in the form of discrete drops so that phase separation occurs between each pair of plates. The flow ratio of one liquid to the other may be controlled by different flow times and/or by different pressures. The period of rest of each liquid is preferably longer than the period of flow of the other, the difference being as small as possible but generally at least 0.2 second, and the times of flow and rest should be such that a permanent emulsion is not formed. The lighter liquid should not wet the upper surfaces of the perforated plates nor the heavier liquid the lower surfaces, suitable varnishes being used if necessary and the distance between plates should be at least 5 times the diameter of liquid drops formed, e.g. about 50 mm. It is also useful for the holes in the plates to be conical in shape, narrower at the top than the bottom. In an example a benzene/acetone mixture is contacted with water to obtain benzene of reduced acetone content.ALSO:In a countercurrent liquid-liquid extraction process in a column comprising perforated plates arranged one below the other, the liquids are fed alternately, each liquid flowing only when flow of the other is interrupted and each liquid flowing in the form of discrete drops so that phase separation occurs between each pair of plates.
