FIG 1 In a column (Fig. 1) fitted with trays 2-7 for contacting vapour or gas with liquid, e.g. a distillation or absorption column fitted with grid-trays or with trays provided with bubblecaps, part of the vapour rising in the column towards a tray passes through one or more openings in the tray, on which there is a liquidlayer 8, and another part of the vapour, which is to avoid contact with the liquid on that tray, is by-passed through or around the tray via a by-pass passage 10, 12, 14 and is made to issue into the column at a point higher than the zone where there is froth or dense foam above the tray. The column may also be constructed (Fig. 2) so that the liquid flowing down the column towards a tray passes through one or more openings in the tray or through one or more downcomers 21, 24 of this tray whilst another part of the liquid is by-passed through or around the tray by a by-pass passage 22, 25 so as to avoid contact with the liquid on the tray, and is made to issued into the column below the tray. The degree of vapour by-pass and/or liquid by-pass can be altered by valves, in order to ensure that a number or all the trays have substantially the same load. Reference is made to the fractionation of crude hydrocarbon oil.
