823,108. Contacting gases with liquids. BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V., DE. March 4, 1957 [March 5, 1956], No. 7184/57. Class 55 (2). A downcomer 13 for the tray 11 of a gas/ liquid contacting column 10 is open at its upper end which is at a predetermined height above the tray 11, closed at its lower end 14 and has one or more restricted lateral openings 15, Fig. 3, directed so as to discharge liquid with a horizontal velocity component into the space below the tray so that it may fall on to the next lower tray in the column. The openings 15 may be replaced by a horizontal slot with adjustable shutter. The downcomers may be arranged in alternate trays as shown in Fig. 6.
