Abstract

844,371. Contacting liquids with gases or vapours. Q.V.F. Ltd., and FRESHWATER, D. C. March 1, 1957 [March 6, 1956], No. 7052/56. Class 55 (2). A bubble cap unit comprises two serially-disposed assemblies 3, 2, the assembly 3 having an annular riser 21, an annular bubble cap 22 and a tubular downcomer 24, the assembly 2 having a circular riser 4, a bubble cap 5 and an annular downcomer 18, the downcomers 24 and 7 leading from annular troughs 23 and 6 respectively bounded by the riser walls 30 and 4 and downcomer pipes 24 and 7, respectively, and into which the bubble caps 22 and 5 extend. In an alternative form of the assembly 3 the trough is formed by an annular plate similar to the plate 22 but with its inner flange turned upwardly within a bubble cap formed as an integral extension of the downcomer 24. A weir 16 is mounted on top of the circular bubble cap 5 into which the downcomer 24 empties, and a weir 32 is mounted on the part 25 of the annular bubble cap 22. Bubble cap units according to the invention may be of circular cross-section, as shown, or of oval or polygonal cross-section for use in oval or polygonal columns.
