Abstract

762,985. Contacting gases with liquid. LOUGHBOROUGH GLASS CO., Ltd. Feb. 18, 1955 [Feb. 18, 1954], No. 4795/54. Class 55 (2). A gas-liquid contact apparatus comprises a column of detachably connected sections 1 with a plate 5 between each section, the plates having holes to receive removable vapour risers 9, each of which has a bubble cap 11 integrally united to the upper end of the vapour riser 9. As shown, a glass column comprises sections 1 having externally flanged ends or enlarged tapered parts 2 which are clamped together by pairs of clamping rings 3, split-rings 4 and bolts. The circular plates 5 are positioned between the sections using gaskets 6. Tapered holes 7a, 7, in plates 5 receive downcomer pipes 8 and vapour risers 9, the latter being locked by pins (not shown), passing through holes in the walls of the risers and engaging the undersides of plates 5. The bubble cap 11 has a slotted skirt 11a and communicates with the interior of the vapour riser at the upper end through holes 9b in the riser. In a modification the cap 11 is moulded with an annular bulge around the skirt portion and is slotted. In a further modification each vapour riser has a lower portion for insertion in a cylindrical hole in the plate and has a flange which rests upon the upper surface of the plate, the riser being fixed by a pin. Alternatively the risers may be detachably mounted by screw-threaded or bayonet connections. The holes in the plates may have surrounding frusto-conical or cylindrical flanges into or over which the end of a riser or downcomer pipe may fit. The column may be of metal, earthenware or plastic material.
