1,031,685. Automatic control of distillation columns. HITACHI SEISAKUSHO KABUSHIKI KAISHA. March 11,1963 [March 10,1962; Sept. 1, 1962], No. 9631/63. Heading B1B. The operation of a distillation column 4, for the fractionation of a multi-component mixture, is automatically controlled by operational section 9 in accordance with signals from optimizer 8, comprising relay circuits, which receives instructions from computer 5 via memory device 6 and comparator 7. In one embodiment, a device (not shown) for measuring the composition of the distillate is connected to the input to computer 5; and the column is operated to maintain the composition of the distillate at a specified value with minimum input of heat to the reboiler and minimum withdrawal of heat from the condenser. The computer equipment can achieve this by approximating the characteristic curve of economical operation of the column by a curve having the distillate-composition as parameter and, as control variable, the ratio of the feed rate to the distillate withdrawal rate. Alternatively, the computer equipment may approximate the distillate composition curve by a curve having the reflux ratio as parameter and, as control variable, the distillate withdrawal rate. The column may also be operated in dependence on the composition of the bottom product.
