Abstract

1.118,599. Control of fractionating columns. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 29 Nov., 1965 [30 Nov., 1964], No. 50589/65. Heading B1B Continuous fractionation of a mixture in a distillation column is controlled automatically to obtain overhead and bottoms products of constant composition by adjusting the reflux flow through line 8 by means of a controller 28 in proportion to the heat-flow through line 16 to the reboiler 14 by a signal derived from a meter 24 which measures the heat-flow, while at the same time adjusting the heat flow by a controller 25 actuated by a signal from a meter 20 which measures the composition of the bottoms product. Thus any change in vapour flow to the column necessary to maintain the desired composition of the bottoms product is immediately compensated for by a corresponding change in reflux flow so that the ratio between vapour and reflux flows in the upper part of the column is kept constant and hence the desired composition of the overhead product is maintained. The liquid level in the base of the column is kept within desired limits by a gauge 22 and controller 23 adjusting the bottoms product flow. In the accumulator 7 the liquid level is maintained by a gauge 29 and controller 30 adjusting the overhead product flow. In the modification of Fig. 2 not shown, the output from the heat flow meter 24 is directed to a controller for the overhead product flow, with the level controller for the accumulator adjusting the reflux flow.
