Abstract

1,119,790. Control of fractionating columns. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 29 Nov., 1965 [30 Nov., 1964], No. 50592/65. Heading B1B. A distillation column 1 is automatically controlled to obtain top and bottom products of constant composition by (a) controlling the composition of the bottom product by adjusting the feed stream flow rate in proportion to a signal derived from a composition measuring meter 20 and (b) maintaining liquid levels in the top accumulator 7 and in the base of the column I between desired levels by level gauges 26 and 22. A controller 30 maintains the ratio between the top product flow and the reflux flow at a desired level. Alternatively, the top product flow may be kept at an independent value and then the reflux flow is controlled only by the level gauge 26 (Fig. 3, not shown). The heat flow to the reboiler is controlled by a mater 24 and controller 25. If there is a change in intake mixture the composition of the top product is measured by meter 34 (Fig. 4, not shown) and a signal passes to the heat flow controller 25 and also to the reflux controller 27 which also has a signal fed to it from the level gauge. If the bottom product flow is kept at an independent rate then the heat flow to the reboiler is adjusted by a signal derived from a level gauge 22, Fig. 6, not shown. The modification of Fig. 7, not shown, ensures that the contribution from the feed stream to the vapour flow in the upper part of the column is kept at a desired level by means of a flow meter 40 and controller 43 adjusting the preheater 4.
