Abstract

1367664 Separation of water from organic solvents IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 4 July 1972 [12 July 1971] 32535/71 Heading BID Water is separated from water-immiscible liquid halogenated hydrocarbon solvents by an apparatus using a foam filter element. The solvent is passed by an inlet 7 into a vessel 1 (Fig. 1) divided into three compartments 4, 5, 6, the middle of which 5 contains a foam block 10, e.g. of polyurethane, polyethylene, polyvinylchloride, polycarbonate or phenol/ formaldehyde resin. The first or inlet compartment 4 acts as a gravity separator, an upper continuous body 15 of water being formed therein and thus overflows over the top of baffle 13 into the upper part of the second compartment 5. Halogenated hydrocarbon Which still contains some entrained water droplets flows out of the bottom of compartment 4 under baffle 3 and then upwardly through the foam element 10. This coaleses the water which then rises to form a continuous body 16 together with that which has overflowed from compartment 4 and is then removed by outlet 8. The water-free halogenated hydrocarbon passes from foam element 10 under baffle 2 into compartment 6 and is removed at 9.
