Abstract

958,372. Gravity-separation apparatus. THOMAS VALE & SONS Ltd., and H. E. PARTRIDGE. June 23, 1961 [July 6, 1960], No. 23564/60. Heading B1D. Apparatus for separating solids from liquid suspensions thereof comprises a separation vessel 1 having an inlet 20 for a solids-bearing liquid and an annular channel 4 for permitting liquid to be discharged therefrom at the top of the vessel, radial partitions 17, 18, 19, Fig. 1 (not shown), dividing at least the upper region into compartments, and a valve 40 on the outlet 39 from each compartment effecting single, sequential liquid discharge from the compartments. Each compartment has three separate sludge discharge pipes 23, 26, 27 and an additional, or alternative, outlet 28, 29, 30 with a valve (not shown) to enable the sludge to be discharged by the hydrostatic head to a concentrator such as 33 where, after settlement, the liquid is removed through a pipe 37 and sludge extracted by a pump 36. The partitions may end above, or extend to, the bottom of inner conical portions 7, 12, 3 of the apparatus, to allow simultaneous, or separate, sludge removal respectively from the compartments. In a modification (not shown) each compartment may be provided with a separately adjustable weir, such that liquid discharge therefrom can be started and stopped by respectively lowering and raising the weir manually, or by a mechanism.
