Abstract

A granular washing composition comprises (a) finely divided granular soap, suitably in amount by weight of at least 10% and preferably at least 30%, (b) 33-83%, preferably 50-80%, of finely divided borax, and (c) sodium acetate or benzoate as an anti-lumping agent, suitably in an amount of 0,5-25%, preferably 0,5-10%, by weight of (a). Soap (a) should be of particle size predominantly finer than 30 mesh (U.S.S.) and suitably consists of 10-40% coconut soap and 90-60% tallow soap; the borax (b) should be of particle size predominantly finer than 40 mesh. The composition generally also contains 0,1-2% of a polyacrylamide such as the hydrolysates produced by the homopolymerization of acrylamide or by copolymerization of acrylamide with up to 15% of the alkyl esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids; usually 0,8-10% of the amide groups are replaced by carboxyl groups. Corn starch, sugar, talc, wood flour, vermiculite, calcium phosphate, sodium sulphate, perfume, cosmetic agents and foaming agents may also be incorporated.
