Abstract

A granular soap composition contains at least 10% by weight, preferably at least 30% of a granular soap predominantly finer than 30 mesh (U.S.S.) and 0.5-20% (based on the soap) of urea, no synthetic detergents being present. A preferred composition contains 20-50% of such a soap, 50-80% of granular borax predominantly finer than 40 mesh, and 1-10% (based on the soap) of urea. The compositions suitably also include 0.1-2% of a polyacrylamide as an emollient. Homopolymers, or copolymers of acrylamide with up to 15% by weight of monomers such as alkyl esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids, methacrylamide, styrene, vinyl acetate, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, vinyl alkyl ethers, and vinyl and vinylidene chlorides, in which 0.8-10% of the amide groups present have been hydrolysed to carboxyl groups, may be used as the emollient. Cornstarch, sugar, wood flour, vermiculite, talc, calcium phosphate, potassium sulphate, perfumes, foaming agents, colouring agents and cosmetic agents may also be incorporated.
