Abstract

907,223. Pressure gauges; dynamometers. BRADBURY & SONS Ltd., JOSEPH. Oct. 13, 1959 [Oct. 21, 1958], No. 33596/58. Class 106 (2). An hydraulic pressure indicator comprises a vertical tube 12, a compressible container 31, Fig. 3, for hydraulic fluid connected to the bottom of the tube, the tube containing air above the level of the hydraulic fluid, a valve 29 at the upper part of the tube to enable the pressure of the air to be brought to atmospheric, and means 21 for initially adjusting the level of the fluid at the bottom of the tube. The tube 12 is tapered so that its lower portion is wider than its upper and the spacing of the calibration marks is more uniform. It is connected through an opening 28 to a pipe 22 leading from an hydraulic load cell, Fig. 3. A valve 24 having internal bores 25 is adapted to close the opening 28 when a sleeve 21 is screwed into the body of the indicator. This seals the pipe 22 from the tube 12 e.g. when the device is being transported. In use, with no pressure on the load cell, and a bleed screw 29 opened, the sleeve 21 is adjusted to bring the level of fluid in the tube to a zero mark 16a. The screw 29 is then closed, thus trapping air in the top of the tube 12 and the device is ready for use. The load cell consists of a metal bellows 31 to which the pressure is applied, having clamps 45 to hold it to the brake pedal 47 of a car. Thus, when testing the brakes of the car, any pressure applied is shown on the indicator tube 12 which may be placed in any suitable position.
