Abstract

1478418 Triaxial load cells TURRET ENG Ltd 30 Jan 1976 [27 Jan 1975] 3448/75 Headings G1N and G1S A device for applying a load to a triaxial liquidfilled load cell chamber, e.g. for soil specimens, and for measuring the load comprises a tube 1 slidable through a seal in an opening in the chamber wall 19, a rod 2 e.g. of steel whose inner end 3 projects from the tube 1 within the chamber and whose outer end is fixed, e.g. by screw-threads 11, to the tube outside the chamber, a flexible annular metal diaphragm 16, e.g. of 0À020 inch stainless steel sheet, extending in a plane normal to the axis of the rod, the inner periphery of the diaphragm being fixed to the rod 2 and its outer periphery to a flange 13 extending from the tube, the space 7 between the rod and the tube being sealed against entry of liquid from the chamber by a ring 8 of flexible material, e.g. an O-ring, and being vented at 10 to atmosphere, and at least one strain gauge 6 mounted on the rod, between its outer end and the ring 8, to measure the force applied by the rod to the specimen via a load distributing member 4. There may be two strain gauge rosettes positioned diametrically oppositely on a reduced portion 5 of the rod.
