Abstract

752,356. Determining specific gravity. ULTRA ELECTRIC. Ltd. Jan. 28, 1955 [Jan. 28, 1954], No. 2632/54. Class 97 (3). A device for the continuous measurement of the density of liquids consists of an axially expansible cylindrical chamber rotatable about its axis and provided with means for the admission and exhaust of the liquid the density of which is to be measured, the axially displaceable part of the chamber serving to operate the device. As shown, a cylinder 1 is closed by a flexible disc 2 clamped against the end of cylinder 1 by a cap 3. Most of the area of the disc 2 is held between discs 4, 5 screwed to the end of a rod 6, movable loosely in cap 3 along the axis of cylinder 1. A compression spring 11 is mounted between disc 4 and the inner surface of cap 3. The liquid the density of which is to be measured is led into and out of cylinder 1 by concentric tubes 8, 10. The device is rotated in bearings (not shown) about the axis of cylinder 1, radial vanes 12 being provided in the cylinder to ensure that the liquid in the cylinder rotates with it. An axial force is produced which moves rod 6 against spring 11, the force being proportional, for a given rotational speed, to the density of the liquid in cylinder 1, and the movement of the rod can be used to operate an indicator. Instead of the diaphragm, rod 6 may be connected to a piston or an extensible bellows.
