[Also in Group VIII] A succession of seamless tubular elements, to form slipper-like articles worn between boot or shoe and the stocking or sock, are knitted in string formation, each element comprising a rim 2 incorporating laid-in rubber thread 5, a body portion 3, surplus courses 4, separating courses 7 and, if desired, break threads 8; and after manual separation, each element is applied, by the course immediately preceding the surplus courses, to the needles of a linking machine, the courses 4 are removed, e.g. by a knife carried by the machine, and a seam 10 of relatively high extensibility is formed to close the lower end of the element. The parts 2, 3 may be of stretch yarn, crimped yarn, cotton, or wool.
