Abstract

906,417. Laminates. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. Aug. 30, 1960 [Sept. 17, 1959], No. 29822/60. Drawings to Specification. Class 140. [Also in Group IX] An armoured fabric capable of being joined to unarmoured or similar armoured fabrics to form shaped articles of projectile resistant clothing comprises two textile fabrics joined together, e.g. by stitching, along parallel rows to form a series of adjacent pockets, each of which contains a projectile-resistant plate, e.g. of steel, which is held firmly in place by shrunk thermoplastic yarns contained in at least one of the fabrics. The armoured fabric may be made by using a first and second fabric, at least one of which has heat-shrinkable yarns, or which both have heat-shrinkable yarns of different shrinkage capacities, e.g. polyethylene, or a copolymer of polyvinylidene chloride and polyvinyl chloride, inserting projectile-resistant plates in the pockets formed by the parallel joins, and heating, e.g. in water, said fabrics to shrink the yarns into tight engagement with the said plate. The shrinking may be carried out by passing the armoured fabric into hot water at an angle to the surface such that the unequal shrinkage properties causes one fabric to shrink more than the other, thus pulling an edge of one plate over the edge of the adjacent plate in an overlapping shingle effect. Layers of the projectile-resistant fabric may be joined together or may be attached to a harness of narrow webbing. Drawing-in draft information on the weaving of the fabric is given in the Specification.
